Old-Fashioned Gingerbread recipe

Fill your home with the holiday aroma ofgingerbread baking in the oven and put a festive mood in theair. Then serve your guests warm gingerbread topped with sweetenedwhipped cream.

Recipe: Old-Fashioned Gingerbread

2 cups granulated sugar1 cup butter or margarine, melted1/4 cup molasses2 teaspoons ground ginger1 teaspoon ground nutmeg1 teaspoon ground cinnamon1 teaspoon ground cloves1/8 teaspoon salt2 teaspoons baking soda2 cups buttermilk2 large eggs3 cups all-purpose flourSweetened whipped cream for accompaniment(optional)

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).Grease and flour a 13 x 9 x 2-inch baking pan; set aside.
  • Combine sugar, butter, molasses, ginger,nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves and salt in a large mixing bowl; stirwell.
  • Dissolve baking soda in buttermilk. Addto first mixture, beating well at medium speed of an electricmixer until well blended. Add eggs and blend well. Add flourand beat until just blended.
  • Pour batter into prepared baking pan.
  • Bake for 45 to 50 minutes or until a woodenpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pan on a wirerack. Serve with sweetened whipped cream, if desired.

    Make 15 servings.
