Recipe: Old-Fashioned CrackedSugar Cookies
2 cups all-purpose flour2 teaspoons baking soda2 teaspoon cream of tartar1/2 teaspoon salt1 cup vegetable shortening1 cup granulated sugar1/2 cup firmly packed light brown sugar1 large egg1 teaspoon vanilla extractAdditional sugar for rolling
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour,baking soda, cream of tartar and salt; set aside.
In a large mixing bowl, using an electricmixer at medium speed, cream together shortening, 1 cup sugarand brown sugar until light and fluffy; add egg and vanilla andblend well. Stir in flour mixture until just blended.
Shape dough into 1-inch balls; roll inadditional sugar. Place 2-inches apart onto ungreased bakingsheets.
Bake for 10 to 12 minutes or until edgesare very lightly browned. Cool for2 minutes on baking sheets; transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
Makes about 5 dozen.
