A good basic, old fashioned chocolate cake.
Recipe: Old Fashioned ChocolateCake
2 2/3 cups cake flour
Heat oven to 350°F (175°C). Greaseand flour 13 x 9 x 2-inch baking pan.
In a medium bowl, mix together flour,baking powder and salt; set aside.
In a small saucepan, combine chocolateand water and cook over low heat, stirring occasionally, untilchocolate is melted. Set aside to cool slightly.
In a large mixing bowl, beat butter andsugar until light and fluffy; add egg yolks and vanilla and beatwell. Add cooled chocolate mixture and beat until blended.
Add flour mixture alternately with milkto the butter/chocolate mixture.
In a medium bowl, beat egg whites untilstiff, but not dry; fold into batter. Pour batter into preparedpan.
Bake 45 to 50 minutes or until woodenpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool completely in panon wire rack.
Frost as desired.
3 teaspoons baking powder
3/4 teaspoon salt5 (1-ounce) squares unsweetened bakingchocolate, broken into pieces
1/2 cup water
3/4 cup butter, softened
2 1/4 cups granulated sugar
6 large eggs, separated
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
3/4 cup milk
Makes 12 to 15 servings.
