Homemade German Chocolate Cake recipe

A fabulous recipe for homemade German chocolatecake using cocoa.

Recipe: Homemade German ChocolateCake

Cake:1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder1/2 cup boiling water2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt1 cup plus 3 tablespoons butter, softened2 1/4 cups granulated sugar1 teaspoon vanilla extract4 large eggs
1 cup buttermilk*Coconut Pecan Frosting:1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk(not evaporated milk)
3 large egg yolks, slightly beaten
1/2 cup butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 1/3 cups sweetened flaked coconut
1 cup chopped pecansPecan halves for garnish (optional)

  • Heat oven to 350°F (175°C). Greaseand flour three 9-inch round baking pans.
  • For Cake: Stir together cocoa and waterin small bowl until smooth; set aside.
  • Stir together flour, baking soda and salt;set aside.
  • Beat butter, sugar and vanilla in largebowl until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beatingwell after each addition.
  • Add flour mixture to butter mixture alternatelywith chocolate mixture and buttermilk, beating just enough toblend. Pour batter into prepared pans.
  • Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until top springsback when touched lightly. Cool 5 minutes; remove from pans towire racks. Cool completely.
  • For Coconut Pecan Frosting: In a mediumsaucepan, stir together sweetened condensed milk, egg yolks andbutter and cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until mixtureis thickened and bubbly. Remove fromheat; stir in vanilla, coconut and pecans. Cool to room temperature.Spread frosting between layers and over top of cake.

    Makes 12 servings.

    *Or place 1 tablespoon white vinegar ina measuring cup and add milk to equal 1 cup. Allow to set for2 to 3 minutes before using.

    Spread filling between layers and on top of cake. In a small saucepan, melt shortening and 1 ounce of chocolate. Stir until smooth and drizzle down the sides of the cake.
