Holiday Fun Sugar Cookies.

Baking sugar cookies cut into whimsicalfigures and decorating them is an annual holiday tradition inmany homes. In my own, family and friends have been known togather in the kitchen wearing funny elf hats to bake and decoratescores of cookies for Christmastime eating and gifting! Eventhe younger ones get in on the act and are assigned to the ‘sprinklespatrol’.

Recipe: Holiday Fun SugarCookies

Cookie Dough:2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour1 teaspoon baking soda1 teaspoon cream of tartar1 cup butter, softened1 1/2 cups powdered sugar1 teaspoon vanilla extract1/2 teaspoon almond extract1 large eggThin Icing:2 cups powdered sugar, sifted1/4 cup 2% milk1/4 teaspoon vanilla extractFood coloring (optional)Assorted cake/cookie sprinklesPastry brush for spreading icing on cookies

  • In a medium bowl, combine flour, bakingsoda and cream of tartar; set aside.
  • In large mixing bowl, cream together thebutter and powdered sugar until fluffy. Addegg and extracts and beat well. Stir in flour mixture until justmixed. Cover and refrigerate doughfor at least 2 hours.
  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).Lightly grease baking sheets.
  • Divide dough in half. Roll each half 1/4-inchthink on a lightly floured surface. Cutinto desired shapes with 2 to 2 1/2-inch cookie cutters. Placecookies about 2-inches apart on bakingsheets. Bake on top rack of oven for8 to 10 minutes or until edges are lightly browned. Transfer to wire racks to cool.
  • For Thin Icing: Mix together all ingredientsuntil smooth and thin enough to brush onto cookies using a pastrybrush. If icing is too thick, add small amounts of milk at atime until consistency works for you. Tint with food coloring,as desired.
  • Brush cookies with Thin Icing and decoratewith an assortment of cookie sprinkles. Allowto air-dry completely before storing in airtight container.

    Makes 4 dozen or 48 cookies.
