Hickory BBQ Sauce recipe

Homemade barbecue sauce is not only economical,it tastes great…maybe even better than your favorite commercialbrand!

Recipe: Hickory BBQ Sauce

1 tablespoon butter
1 onion, chopped
2 cups tomato ketchup
1/2 cup cider vinegar
1/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon smoke flavoring
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
2 teaspoons chili powder
1/2 teaspoon liquid hot pepper sauce

  • Melt butter in a saucepan over low heat;add chopped onion and cook until tender, stirring frequently.Add ketchup, cider vinegar, brown sugar, smoke flavoring, Worcestershiresauce, chili powder, and liquid hot pepper sauce. Heat on lowfor 30 minutes; stirring often.

    Makes about 3 cups.

    April you could try increasing the tomato sauce but really, you ll have to just play around with it and see. I ve never subbed anything for the ketchup so I can t attest to the results. If you hit on a great combination, let me know. I ve been wanting to make my own BBQ sauce for a while but I would like to make it without bottled ketchup. Your recipe looks delicious, do you know what I would do to substitute the ketchup with other tomato ingredients?
