Helm’s Bakery Brownies recipe

We cannot guarantee this is the originalrecipe used by the now-defunct Helm’s Bakery of Southern Californiafame. As in the preparation of any recipe, two cooks using thesame recipe can end up with two different results. There aremany variants that can alter the taste and outcome of a recipe,such as preparation procedure, the brand or type of ingredientsused, even the way an oven works–the slightest deviation canmake all the difference in the world.

Recipe: Helm’s Bakery Brownies

3/4 cup butter or margarine, cut in chunks3 ounces unsweetened chocolate1 1/3 cups granulated sugar2 large eggs1 teaspoon vanilla extract1/2 cup all-purpose flour1/2 cup chopped nuts

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).Generously grease an 8-inch square baking pan.
  • Melt margarine and chocolate togetherin medium saucepan. Blend in sugar, eggs, vanilla, flour andnuts. Pour into prepared pan.
  • Bake until it is crispy at the edges andfeels fairly firm in the center, about 30 to 40 minutes.
  • Cool 30 minutes before cutting.

    Makes 12 brownies.
