Recipe: “Hearts”for Christmas Cookies

4 cups granulated sugar1/2 cup butter or margarine1/2 cup lard or shortening1 quart soured cream (real cream gonesour)10 cups all-purpose flour1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, freshly ground

  • In large bowl cream sugar, butter andlard until fluffy, add the soured cream, mixing well. Stir inthe flour and cinnamon, combining well. Coverand refrigerate overnight.
  • Roll dough out on floured board or tableto desired thickness, not too thin,about 1/2-inch thick. Cut into 6 to8-inch strips, 1/2 to 5/8-inch widewith a grooved cutting wheel. Shape into hearts.Brush tops with beaten egg yolk, thinnedwith a little milk, if needed.
  • Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 10 to15 minutes.

    Makes about 6 to 8 dozen.
