Recipe: Filhos

3 1/4 cups sifted all-purpose flour3 tablespoons granulated sugar1/2 teaspoons salt2 large eggs, slightly beaten6 tablespoons water2 tablespoons Port wine1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract1 tablespoon butter, meltedLard for deep frying*Powdered sugar

  • In large mixing bowl combine flour, sugarand salt; mixing well; set aside.
  • In small mixing bowl combine eggs, water,Port wine, vanilla and melted butter.Add to flour mixture and mix well.
  • Roll out thin on lightly floured surfaceand cut in 2-inch squares. Make a cutin one corner; pull the opposite corner through.
  • Deep fry in hot lard (375°F / 190°C)for 2 minutes or until golden brown.Drain on paper towels. Sprinkle with powdered sugar.

    Yield: About 5 to 6 dozen.

    *Forauthenticity in flavor, use lard not shortening.
