Sweetened condensed milk and crushed, meltedchocolate-covered candy pieces make up the crunchy fudge fillinglayered between a nutty-oat crust and crumb topping dotted withmore candy pieces.
Recipe: Festive Fudge-FilledBars
2 cups quick cooking oatmeal
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
In a large bowl, combine quick cookingoatmeal (uncooked), flour, chopped nuts, brown sugar, bakingsoda, and salt. Stir in melted butter until the mixture resemblescoarse crumbs. Reserve 1 1/2 cups of the flour mixture, pressingthe remainder into a greased and floured 9 x 13-inch pan. Bakefor 10 minutes.
Melt shortening in a saucepan over lowheat. Stir in 1 cup candy-covered chocolate pieces, pressingwith a spoon until broken. Heat until melted. Remove from theheat and stir in sweetened condensed milk. Spread overthe baked layer to within 1/2-inch of the edge.
Add 1/2 cup candy-covered chocolate piecesto the reserved flour mixture and sprinkle on top, pressing inlightly. Bake until golden brown, about 20 minutes. Cool beforecutting into bars.

1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup butter or margarine, melted
2 tablespoons vegetable shortening
1 1/2 cups candy covered chocolate pieces – divided use
1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
Makes 24 bars.
