Dutch Almond Bars recipe

These delicious bars made with almond pasteare traditionally decorated with candied cherries and baked ina round pan, cut into wedges and served at Christmas, but theyare wonderful anytime of the year.

Recipe: Dutch Almond Bars

1 cup butter3/4 cup granulated sugar1/2 cup almond paste1 teaspoon almond extract2 cups all-purpose flour1 large egg, separated1/4 cup almonds, sliced

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).Grease 8 x 8 x 2-inch baking pan*. Set aside.
  • In large bowl mix butter and sugar withan electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy. Add the egg yolk, almondpaste and almond extract, beating untilmixed. Stir in flour until well mixed. Press into prepared bakingpan.
  • Beat egg white until foamy and brush overdough. Sprinkle with almonds and bake for 30 minutes.Cool on wire rack and cut into bars.

    Makes 12 bars.

    *Or use a greased 9-inch round cake pan.Cut in wedges to serve.
