Double Chocolate Chip Brownies recipe

Applesauce replaces most of the fat inthese moist, double chocolate brownies.

Recipe: Double ChocolateChip Brownies

2 tablespoons butter or margarine
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup applesauce
3 egg whites, beaten until white peaks form
1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
1/3 cup chopped nuts

  • In a heavy saucepan over low heat meltbutter and add 1 cup chocolate chips, sugar and applesauce; stirringconstantly about 2 minutes. Remove from heat; fold in beatenegg whites, mixing well. Set aside.
  • Combine flour, baking soda and salt ina large bowl and stir well. Pour chocolate mixture into flourmixture; beat until blended. Add vanilla, remaining chocolatechips and nuts into creamed mixture; stir until thoroughly mixed.
  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
    Spread into a greased 13 x 9 x 2-inch baking pan. Bake in ovenfor 16 to 20 minutes or until the center is set. Remove fromoven. Cool completely on rack before cutting.

    Makes 30 bars.
