Caramel Nut Bars recipe

Who can resist these chewy caramel andchocolate bars with a delightful toasty oat crust and topping?

Recipe: Caramel Nut Bars

1 cup quick-cooking oats1 cup packed brown sugar1 cup all-purpose flour3/4 cup butter, melted1/2 teaspoon baking soda1/4 teaspoon salt1 (14-ounce) package caramels1/3 cup milk1 cup semisweet chocolate chips1/2 cup chopped walnuts

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Combine the first six ingredients; sprinkle1 cup into a greased 13 x 9 x 2-inch baking pan.Do not press. Bake for 10 minutes.
  • Cook caramels in the milk in a doubleboiler over simmering water, stirring until caramels are melted and mixture is smooth. Pour over crust.Sprinkle with chocolate chips and nuts.Top with remaining oat mixture.
  • Bake for 10 to 15 minutes. Cool on wirerack.

    Makes 3 dozen bars.

    Let me just say that it was pure torture, photographing these bars. Because I love them, and the smell of caramel and toasted nuts and shortbread was almost more than I could bear. Try them, and I guarantee that you will love them too. Carolyn you didn t have to sell me on anything.. I just saw the title and knew they were going to be good! They look absolutely delicious.. such wonderful flavors and with a shortbread crust? oh man.. I have to make these..
