Bread Machine Pulla recipe

Pulla, a traditional Finnish coffee bread,is a braided, cardamom-scented bread, topped with sugared slicedalmonds. It makes a wonderful holiday gift.

Recipe: Bread Machine Pulla

1 large egg plus 1 egg yolk
3/4 cup milk
3 tablespoons butter
4 1/2 tablespoons granulated sugar
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom
3 cups bread flour
1 tablespoon active dry yeast
Glaze:1 large egg white beaten with 2teaspoons water
2 tablespoons sliced almonds
1 to 2 teaspoons sugar

  • Place all dough ingredients in bread machinepan in order according to manufacturer. Choose dough setting.When dough is ready, take out and punch down.
  • Cut into 3 equal pieces. On a lightlyfloured surface, roll each piece into a rope about 20-incheslong. On a greased baking sheet, braid the ropes, tucking endsunder. Cover and set in warm place to rise until doubled.
  • Brush dough with egg wash. Sprinkle withalmonds and then with sugar.
  • Bake in preheated 375°F (190°C)oven for about 35 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on wirerack.

    Makes 1 loaf.

    Have been making a lot of honey whole wheat bread lately, and your recipe sounds delicious. I have been kneading it in a stand mixer, which I love using. Cant wait to try this rec. here in Canada i finely found red star yeast at our Costco s London Ontario Canada i was so excited been wanting red star yeast for some today was the day i made bread using yr yeast bread turned out wonderful your red star yeast is much diff from flesermanns yeast why??? the smell with bread baking using yr yeast is different , the rise is diff I m so amazed at this yeast thank you so much bring to Canada and at my disposal thank you diane bolt
