Braised Red Cabbage recipe

Sweet and sour braised red cabbage withchopped onion and thinly sliced Granny Smith apple.

Recipe: Braised Red Cabbage

1 head red cabbage, finely sliced1/4 cup red wine vinegar1 teaspoon granulated sugar1 onion, finely chopped4 tablespoons butter1 Granny Smith apple, thinly slicedFreshly ground pepper to tasteSalt to taste

  • Toss cabbage with vinegar, sugar and salt.Allow to marinate for one hour.
  • In large covered saucepan, saute onionin butter until softened. Stir in cabbageand cook for a few minutes. Add 2 cupswater and season with pepper. Bringto a boil.
  • Layer apple slices on top of the cabbage.Cover and simmer for 1 hour, checking the waterlevel from time to time, and adding a littlewater if necessary. Add salt to taste beforeserving, if desired.

    Makes 6 servings.

    Great recipe. Really easy and much quicker than some of the other red cabbage recipes I have tried. The added bonus for me is it is cooked on the hob not in the over – much more economical. But it makes loads so have plenty of room in your freezer!! Love the new look or think we’ve missed the mark?
