Basic Chocolate Cake with Chocolate Frosting recipe

Why use a cake mix when with just a littlemore effort you can make one that is truly homemade, truly tastesbetter…and you have the self-satisfaction of truly saying youmade it?!!

Recipe: Basic Chocolate Cakewith Chocolate Frosting

2 cups all-purpose flour
2/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 1/4 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon baking powder3/4 cup butter, softened
1 2/3 cups granulated sugar
3 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 1/3 cups waterChocolate Frosting:6 tablespoons butter, softened
2 2/3 cups powdered sugar
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/3 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • Heat oven to 350°F (175°C). Greaseand flour two 9-inch round baking pans or one 13 x 9 x 2-inchbaking pan.
  • For Cake: In a medium bowl, mix togetherflour, cocoa, baking soda, salt and baking powder; set aside.
  • In a large bowl, combine butter, sugar,eggs and vanilla in large bowl and beat on high speed of mixer3 minutes.
  • Alternatively add flour mixture with waterto butter mixture, beating until well blended. Pour batter intoprepared pan(s).
  • Bake 30 to 35 minutes or until woodenpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes; removefrom pans to wire racks. Cool completely.
  • For Chocolate Frosting: Beat butter inmedium bowl. Add powdered sugar and cocoa alternately with milk,beating to spreading consistency (additional milk may be needed,1 teaspoon at a time until desired consistency).
  • Frost cooled cake.

    Makes 8 to 10 servings.

    Directions For Cupcakes: Fill paper-linedmedium-sized muffin cups 2/3 full with batter. Bake at 350°F(175°C) for 20 to 25 minutes; cool completely and frost.Makes about 2 1/2 dozen cupcakes.

    Hi Susan, I just finished using this frosting recipe, and the directions of using melted butter seemed strange to me, like it d make the frosting too runny.
