Recipe: Apple-Walnut Tart
3 (12-ounce) packages frozen escallopedapples 1 cup chopped walnuts, toasted 3 tablespoons firmly packed light brown sugar 1/4 teaspoon apple pie spice 1 1/4 cups graham cracker crumbs 1/4 cup finely ground walnuts 3 tablespoons firmly packed light brown sugar 1/4 cup butter or margarine, melted 3 large egg whites 1/4 teaspoon cream of tarter 1/4 cup granulated sugar
Thaw escalloped apples in microwave atMEDIUM (50% power) 6 to 7 minutes. Stir together apples, toastedwalnuts, 3 tablespoons brown sugar, and apple pie spice. Setaside.
Stir together graham cracker crumbs andnext 3 ingredients until blended. Press mixture firmly into an11-inch tart pan or a 9-inch pie plate.
Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 8 to10 minutes. Set tart crust aside.
Beat egg whites and cream of tartar athigh speed with an electric mixer until foamy. Add granulatedsugar, 1 tablespoon at a time, beating until stiff peaks formand sugar dissolves (2 to 4 minutes).
Spoon apple mixture evenly over crust;spread with meringue, sealing to edge of crust.
Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 20 minutes.
Makes 1 (11-inch) tart.
